What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder. People with ADHD may struggle to sustain attention, organize tasks, or complete activities, leading to difficulties in academic, occupational, or social settings. The disorder often emerges in childhood, and its impact can extend into adolescence and adulthood. While the exact cause of ADHD is not fully understood, a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors is believed to contribute to its development. Treatment approaches typically include behavioural interventions, psychoeducation, and, in some cases, medication to help manage symptoms and enhance functioning.

What happens at our specialist private ADHD assessment?

ADHD is a complex condition, and the only way to diagnose it is by completing an assessment with a specialist expert in diagnosing and managing ADHD. Getting an early diagnosis of ADHD is crucial, as appropriate treatment can have a significant impact on the condition in later life. Our ADHD assessments are tailored to your needs, and may include:

Clinical interview - A detailed consultation with a consultant psychiatrist to gather information about your history and current symptoms.

Symptom Questionnaires - We may ask you to complete standardised ADHD symptom rating scales. These questionnaires help in assessing the presence and severity of ADHD symptoms.

Collateral information - Gathering information from other sources, such as school or work records, to provide additional context. Information is only gathered with your explicit consent.

Psychological Testing - In some cases, cognitive or psychological testing may be suggested to assess your cognitive and executive functioning - Both of which can be significantly affected by ADHD.

After the assessment, your consultant will discuss the findings with you and, if necessary, develop a treatment plan.

How does ADHD affect adults?

ADHD symptoms in adults can manifest in various ways, and individuals may experience a combination of the following:

Inattention - Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities, frequently making careless mistakes due to lack of attention to detail or forgetfulness in daily activities.

Hyperactivity - Restlessness and an inability to sit still for extended periods, talking excessively or having a constant need to be on the move.

Impulsivity - Acting without thinking about the consequences, difficulty waiting for a turn and a tendency to interrupt others.

Organization and Time Management Challenges - Difficulty organizing tasks and activities, procrastination and trouble meeting deadlines.

Forgetfulness - Forgetfulness of appointments, obligations, or daily responsibilities.

Difficulty with task completion - Initiating tasks but struggling to complete them.

Mood Swings - Impaired emotional regulation and mood swings.

Relationship Difficulties - Challenges in maintaining relationships due to communication and attention issues.

It's important to note that everyone's experience with ADHD is unique, and symptoms can vary in intensity and by individual. The symptoms of ADHD can also closely resemble other mental health conditions, so it is vital to seek a professional evaluation for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
